The School of Drama and Film at Shenzhen University is the only undergraduate institution in the city dedicated to drama and film, focusing on performance and broadcasting while emphasizing film production. Rooted in Shenzhen and serving the Greater Bay Area metropolitan circle, the school is committed to cultivating professional talent in drama and film.
The Performance program was established in 1995, and the Broadcasting and Hosting Arts program was introduced in 2005. In January 2019, Shenzhen University reorganized its arts disciplines to form the School of Drama and Film within the Division of Arts, merging the Performance program from the former Normal College and the Broadcasting and Hosting Arts program from the School of Communication.
Currently, the school comprises two undergraduate teaching units: the Department of Performance and the Department of Broadcasting and Hosting. Graduate admissions fall under the primary discipline of ""Arts"" (130100), with a focus on ""Drama and Film Studies."" The school hosts several distinguished educational units, including Guangdong Province's first batch of ""Arts Education Master Studios in Higher Education Institutions,"" such as the ""Traditional Culture Communication and Promotion Comprehensive Studio."" The school boasts a dedicated faculty of 26 members, including 2 professors, 8 associate professors, 11 Ph.D. holders, and 4 with overseas study or visiting scholar experience. Many faculty members have practical experience in front-line media hosting and stage performance. The school has garnered over 50 major awards, including the ""National Drama Culture Award,"" the ""Five Top Projects"" Award, the ""Qi Yue Recitation Art Festival"", and the ""National College Student Advertising Competition"". It has undertaken more than 20 national and provincial research projects and published over 60 academic papers in CSSCI journals, along with five academic monographs.
In recent years, the school's enrollment has continuously expanded, and its graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects. Graduates have been employed by national film production institutions, the BBC in the UK, Phoenix TV, Hong Kong Satellite TV, and the Shenzhen Media Group. They have also been admitted to prestigious international universities in the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong, or have taken up roles in government departments and large multinational corporations, specializing in language communication and external affairs.
